TECHNICAL DIGEST #3 - PONDING (June 2007)
This 44-page Digest outlines procedures for the selection of steel joists that are required to meet the stability requirements resulting from the accumulation of water on a roof system, i.e., ponding.  This digest provides background information and discussion concerning the effects of ponding, and makes use of the SJI Load Tables as an aid in assisting designers to comply with the SJI Standard Specifications.  The benefits of camber and pitch of joists in reducing the effects of ponding are discussed and a technique that accounts for these benefits is shown.

TECHNICAL DIGEST #5 - VIBRATION (March 1988)
Forty-four pages of technical information on the vibration of steel joist/concrete slab floors. The Digest includes information on running, dancing, and aerobics, and their effects on steel joist/concrete floor construction. This Digest was authored by the Institute's Consulting Engineer, Dr. Theodore V. Galambos, Professor of Engineering at the University of Minnesota at Minneapolis.

TECHNICAL DIGEST #6 - STRUCTURAL DESIGN OF STEEL JOIST ROOFS TO RESIST UPLIFT LOADS (Revised to July 2003)

In addition to the horizontal forces exerted by wind blowing against a structure, an upward force occurs as the wind passes over the roof. When this upward force exceeds the dead loads supported by the steel joists, a "net" upward (negative) force is created. This "net" uplift must be considered in the joist design.

ASCE 7 is the recognized authority for determination of wind forces. Technical Digest #6 contains examples for designing K and LH Series joists to resist upward wind forces. The Appendix included in the Digest provides an example for wind force determination in accordance with ASCE7-02.

The Steel Joist Institute offers a completely revised Technical Digest consisting of 26 pages of up-to-date information regarding the effects of wind forces on steel joists. A new appendix is included that provides an example for calculating uplift pressures for various portions of the structure based on ASCE 7-95 requirements.

TECHNICAL DIGEST #11 - Design Of Lateral Load Resisting Frames Using Steel Joists And Joist Girders (November 2007)

Technical Digest No. 11, the latest in the Steel Joist Institute’s series of publications, illustrates procedures for the structural engineer to properly analyze, design and specify open web steel joist and Joist Girder moment frames to resist wind and seismic lateral loads.  The design methodology provided is limited to single-story structures subjected to wind and seismic loads; however, the design procedures are applicable to multi-story moment frames subjected to wind loads.

This 120-page second edition, written by James M. Fisher, Ph.D., P.E., Perry S. Green, Ph.D., and Joseph J. Pote, P.E., is an extensive update of the previously issued Technical Digest No. 11 on joist and Joist Girder moment frames.  The digest covers the importance of the relationship between the specifying professional and the joist manufacturer, describes the analysis requirements for modeling the moment frame and provides design methodology for lateral wind loads and seismic loads. It also shows how to properly design and detail the connections and lateral bracing.  There is an extensive discussion on the specification of loads and other design requirements that the specifying professional needs to provide to the joist manufacturer.  Two detailed design examples are contained in the digest.

TECHNICAL DIGEST #12 - EVALUATION & MODIFICATION OF OPEN WEB STEEL JOISTS & JOIST GIRDERS 2007 (February 2007)

This Technical Digest is another addition to the series of Steel Joist Institute publications designed to give the reader information regarding the apllication and usage of steel joists and joist girders.

Technical Digest No. 12 concerns itself with the evalution of existing steel joists and joist girders to carry additional loads not accounted for in their original design.  The technical digest also addresses situations where the configuration and/or the original geometry of the steel joists or joist girders need to be modified in the field.

This and other SJI technical digests serve to highlight specific areas of design and/or application for the benefit of architects, building inspectors, building officials, designers, engineers, erectors, students and others.
